The GUW holds two assessment weekends per year in September, one in North Wales and one in the South. These weekends are a crucial part of our talent ID process and the information we collate on player’s then influences which are selected for squads.

Over the weekend players will go through a number of tests and data collection methods which include an accuracy test with a driver, short game test, putting test, swing analysis, TrackMan and SAM PuttLab data collection. An initial cut is then made with a group of players invited back on to play competitively for 9 holes.

The results gathered over the assessment weekends are then used to select the squads.

On Course

On the second day of the assessment weekend a group of players are invited back to play 9 holes under competition conditions. This enables the coaches to assess the players on the course and gives more chance for a player to demonstrate their ability.

SAM Lab & TrackMan

Players complete a number of shots on two measurement devices;
SAM PuttLab - is an analysis and training system based on accurate ultrasound measurements. It analyzes 28 parameters of the putting stroke and displays the results in graphic reports which the coaches use.
TrackMan - measures the full trajectory of any shot, from 6-foot pitches to 400-yard drives, pinpointing the landing position with an accuracy of 1 foot at 100 yards. TrackMan displays the shot’s actual 3D trajectory together with 26 impact and ball flight data in real time.

Technical Rating

High speed video footage is taken of each players swing which is then reviewed by all coaches and ratings applied. The coaches look at set-up, club position, body position, impact and balance and then score each out of 10.

Skills Test Results

Three stations are given over to skills tests which include a Driving accuracy challenge, Putting test from 3 and 6 feet and finally a Chipping accuracy test. The results of these tests are collated to give a total score per player.

Previous Results

Part of the application form includes the submission of a golfing CV to highlight any results of note that a player has achieved. We also look back at previous performances in GUW events (where applicable) to gain background data on each player.

Age & Handicap

The age and handicap of each player is an obvious guide to their current ability. In the initial nomination phase we look at a players Atomic Number (players age x 2 + current handicap) which provides a guide when deciding who is invited to attend the assessment weekend.

Stroke Average

Players are asked to provide information on their scores in identified events which when added together and averaged out provide a stroke average.
