Pinnacle Order of Merit 2011

The top seven in the Pinnacle Order of Merit will be selected to represent Wales in the 2011 Home International Series to be played at Co Sligo Golf Club, Ireland, 10 - 12 August.

FRAZER 5TH AT SOUTH OF ENGLAND

 

James Frazer (Pennard) finished tied for 5th at the South of England Amateur Championship at Walton Heath after rounds of 69, 73, 75 and 69 to finish on 286 strokes. Frazer collects 47 Pinnacle points and finishes the season in 4th place on the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) after his excellent season wins the Pinnacle Order of Merit for the first time by just over 20 points from Ludlow’s Oliver Farr.

SHUFFLEBOTHAM WINS WELSH AMATEUR

 

 

Jason Shufflebotham (Prestatyn) won the Welsh Amateur Championship at Aberdovey with a won hole victory over Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan). Shufflebotham and Pugh came to the 36th hole and with Pugh on the green in two and with Shufflebotham right of the green Pugh looked in the driving seat, however, a deft chip from the Prestatyn man ran into the hole for victory. Shufflebotham collects 250 Pinnacle points and moves into 3rd place on the Pinnacle table. Pugh collects 150 points and moves back into the No 1 spot with only one event remaining.

 

Shufflebotham progressed quietly through the Championship defeating Nigel Edwards, Robert Simpson, Mark Parry, Mitchell Reid and Lee Jones in the semi finals. Pugh was exceptional early on and then managed to defeat Richard Hooper (Neath) on the 21st in the semi final.

                                                                                      
                                 

ANOTHER GOLD CROSS FOR FARR

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) claimed his second St David’s Gold Cross at Harlech after rounds of 71, 69, 79 and 73 in difficult conditions. Farr’s victory gives him another 150 Pinnacle points and he moves to the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

In 2nd place were Richard Hooper (Neath) and Kristian Taylor (Formby) who both finished one stroke behind Farr on 293 strokes.

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) and the defending Champion and current Welsh Amateur Champion tied for 4th on 296 strokes and both collect 41.5 Pinnacle points.

 

 

HEARNE GETS FIRST WIN AT TUCKER

 

Michael Hearne (Southerndown) won his first Pinnacle Order of merit event at the Tucker trophy over the weekend. Hearne shot four rounds under par of 70, 70, 71 and 67 for a total of 8 under par and a one stroke victory over Welsh Amateur Champion Alastair Jones (Radyr).

 

Hearne collects 100 Pinnacle points and moves into 9th place on the Pinnacle list while Jones collects 60 Pinnacle points and moves up to 4th.

 

Alastair Jones was the winner of the Silver Dragon at Whitchurch with rounds of 69 and 70 while Richard Bentham (St Pierre) won the Golygnos Oak at Newport with rounds of 70 and 67 and finished the tournament in 4th place tied with Jonathan Bale (Royal Porthcawl).  Richard Hooper (Neath) shot the low round of the weekend with a 65 at Whitchurch and finished in 3rd place collecting 40 Pinnacle points.

 

 

BOOTE TOP WELSHMAN AT BRABAZON

 

 

David Boote (Walton Heath) emerged as the top Welshman at the Brabazon Trophy at Burnham & Berrow. Boote shot rounds of 79, 70, 76 and 71 to finish in a tie for 17th. Boote collects 64.5 Pinnacle points and moves into 10th place on the Pinnacle list.

 

Alastair Jones (Radyr) fresh off his quarter final place at the Amateur Championship continued his form tying for 23rd place on 297 strokes (81, 68, 72 and 76) and collects 58.5 Pinnacle points.

 

In total, Wales had 8 players make the 36 hole cut at the Brabazon Trophy including Rhys Pugh, James Frazer, Joe Vickery, Jonathan Bale, Matthew Moseley and Oliver Farr who all collect 50 Pinnacle points.

 

 

JONES REACHES LAST 8 OF AMATEUR

 

 

Welsh Amateur Champion Alastair Jones (Radyr) finished 2nd in the qualifying stages and then progressed to the quarter final stages of the Amateur Championship at Hillside.  Jones was 2nd of the qualifiers with rounds of 72 and 68 and then progressed with a 1 hole victory over Richard Bentham (St Pierre), then defeated Toni Hakula of Finland on the 6th extra hole.  In the last 16 Jones beat Alex Johnson (USA) by 2 holes and then succumbed on the final green to Greg Patterson of Scotland.

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) reached the last 16 and collects 110 Pinnacle points, Jones collects 170 points and Richard Bentham adds 50 Pinnacle points to his total which moves him into 5th place on the table.

 

Matthew Moseley (Carmarthen) finished in tie for 12th place at the Berkshire trophy after rounds of 69, 71, 74 and 73 and collects 21 Pinnacle points.

                                            

ENOCH 2nd AT ST ANDREWS LINKS

 

 

Rhys Enoch (Truro) continued his good form with a tie for 2nd at the St Andrews Links Trophy over the weekend. Enoch lead after day one with a 66 on the New course at St Andrews and then followed up with rounds of 74, 71 and 72 to finish four strokes adrift of winner Tom Lewis. Enoch collects 203.33 Pinnacle points and moves into 2nd place on the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

Also making the cut at St Andrews was Ben Westgate (Trevose) after rounds of 73, 70, 75 and 75 to finish tied for 27th. Westgate collects 54.4 Pinnacle points.

 

At the Aberconwy Trophy Prestatyn’s Jason Shufflebotham lead from start to finish to win by a stroke from Wrexham’s Rhodri Fieldhouse. Shufflebotham collects 100 Pinnacle points while Fiedhouse collects 60 points.

 

                           

ENOCH & FARR T10 AT SCOTTISH STROKE PLAY

 

 

Rhys Enoch (Truro) and Oliver Farr tied for 10th at the Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship at Blairgowrie at the weekend. Both players collect 53 Pinnacle points, Enoch moves up one spot on the Pinnacle list to 7th while Farr remains in 2nd position.

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) is still at the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit and returns to action this week at St Andrews after completing his examinations.

 

                   

ENOCH 4th AT WELSH STROKE PLAY

 

 

Rhys Enoch (Truro) finished as the top Welshman in a tie for 4th at the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship at St Pierre after rounds of 75, 70, 69 and 77 and collects 55 Pinnacle points. Darren Wright (Rowlands Castle) came away as the Champion after 4 tremendous rounds in extremely difficult conditions; 71, 72, 70 and 71 for a four stroke victory over Ben Stowe (Rushmore).

 

Richard Bentham (St Pierre) who led after two rounds finished in 8th place and collects 34 Pinnacle points while Nigel Edwards (Whitchurch) finished in a tie for 14th and collects 17.25 Pinnacle points.

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) who didn’t play at the weekend due to exams remains at the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

    

PUGH WINS IRISH, VICKERY WINS CLWYD

 

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) became the 2nd Welsh winner of the Irish Open Stroke Play after victory in a three hole play off with Scotland’s Gordon Stevenson at Royal Dublin yesterday.  Pugh scored rounds of 72, 70, 74 and 78 and then secured the Championship after Stevenson went out of bounds on the 2nd play off hole leaving Pugh able to take 5 at the final hole.

 

Pugh collects 230 Pinnacle points and moves to the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

At the Clwyd Open Joe Vickery (Newport) returned to the winner’s circle with a two stroke victory over Ludlow’s Billy Mills.  Vickery shot rounds of 70, 66, 70 and closed with 73 to collect the 100 Pinnacle points.  Mills won the Egerton Vase at Wrexham with scores of 70 and 65 while Mark Phillips (Prestatyn) collected the Jubilee Trophy at Prestatyn with scores of 66 and 72.

 

 

                    WESTGATE TOP WELSHMAN AT LYTHAM

    

Ben Westgate (Truro) scored the lowest round of the week at the Lytham Trophy with a third round score of 70 (level par) and finished in a tie for 8th after rounds of 78, 77, 70 and 84 to collect 93.17 Pinnacle points.  The conditions over the weekend were as testing as ever seen at Lytham with the winning score being 19 over par.  Forty mph winds buffeted the course which resulted in a 2nd round average score of 81.75.

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) completed his first Lytham Trophy in a tie for 23rd after rounds of 75, 76, 80, 82 and collects 57.5 Pinnacle points while Oliver Farr (Ludlow) finished in 34th and Richard Bentham (St Pierre) finished in 36th.

    

CLEAN SWEEP FOR FARR

    

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) hit back emphatically after the Duncan Putter with a clean sweep of trophies at the Trubshaw Cup.  Farr scored rounds of 69 and 66 to win the Carmarthenshire Open at Ashburnham and rounds of 69 and 66 at Tenby to win the Tenby Golden Eagle.  Farr’s total of 14 under par saw him lift the Trubshaw Cup for the second year running and he collects 150 Pinnacle Order of Merit points.

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) and Michael Hearne (Southerndown) tied for 2nd place and collect 75 Pinnacle points each.  Pugh scored rounds of 71, 72, 68 and 70, while Hearne scored 68, 70, 71 and 72 for a four round total of 281 strokes.

 

Joe Vickery continued his progress with a 4th place finish while the Duncan Putter winner James Frazer finished in 5th.

 

Juniors; David Boote (Walton Heath) tied for 11th while Welsh Boys Champion, Oliver Baker (Cardiff) finished 13th, all scoring valuable Pinnacle points.

 

 

FIRST WIN FOR FRAZER

    

James Frazer (Pennard) won the Duncan Putter with rounds of 72, 70, 65 and 65 for a four stroke victory over Nuneaton’s Andrew Sullivan.  This was Frazer’s first Pinnacle Order of Merit title and he claims 150 Pinnacle points to lead the Order of Merit.

 

Ben Westgate (Trevose) was Wales’ second placed player in third after scores of 69, 70, 72 and 70 and he collects 90 Pinnacle points.  Joe Vickery returned to form with a tie for 7th and Rhys Pugh closed with a 68 to finish in a tie for 10th.

 

Promising performances came from Wales’ juniors; Will Jones (Oswestry), Zach Galliford (Borth & Ynyslas), Jack Bush (Morlais Castle), Oliver Baker (Cardiff) and Paddy Mullins (Whitchurch) who all made the cut.
