Pinnacle Order of Merit 2010

The top seven in the Pinnacle Order of Merit will be selected to represent Wales in the 2010 Home International Series to be played at Ashburnham Golf Club, Wales, 11 - 13 August.

JONES WINS WELSH AMATEUR

 

Alastair Jones (Radyr) won the Welsh Amateur Championship in style with a 3 & 1 victory over Ludlow’s Oliver Farr. Jones progressed through the Championship until the semi final where he prevailed over Aberystwyth’s Richard James. Jones collects 250 Pinnacle points and finishes the Pinnacle Order of Merit in 2nd place while Farr collects 150 points for his runner up spot.

 

Richard James ensured his place at the Home International matches at Ashburnham next week by reaching the semi finals and finishing 5th on the Pinnacle list while Nick James (Wenvoe Castle) also confirmed his International debut with his semi final spot.

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) won his first Pinnacle Order of Merit title after leading from the start with wins at the Duncan Putter, Trubshaw Cup, following up with solid performances at the Irish Stroke Play, Welsh Stroke Play, the Amateur Championship, 5th place at the Brabazon Trophy and his runner up spot in the Welsh Amateur Championship.

JONES WINS GOLD CROSS

 

Alistair Jones (Radyr) won his first Pinnacle Order of Merit event at the St David’s Gold Cross. The event was reduced to 54 holes following torrential rain but Jones’ rounds of 76, 67 and 69 gave him a three stroke victory over Jamie Howie (Royal St David’s), Jonathon Bale (Royal Porthcawl) and Richard James (Aberystwyth). Jones’ victory gives him 150 Pinnacle points and he moves into 2nd place on the Order of Merit.

 

Howie, Bale and James all collect 65 Pinnacle points each, Jason Shufflebotham (Prestatyn) collects 33 Pinnacle points for finishing 6th and moves into 9th place on the Order of Merit while Aberconwy Trophy winner, Nick James (Wenvoe Castle) tied 7th and maintains his place in the top seven of the Order of Merit before the final event.

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) retains his place at the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

 

BLEASE WINS TUCKER

 

Gareth Blease (Burhill) captured his first Pinnacle order of Merit event at the Tucker Trophy over the weekend.  Blease scored rounds of 66, 69, 72 and 73 to claim 100 Pinnacle points.  Blease’s total of 280, 6 under par was one stroke clear of Chris Nugent (Fulford Heath) and Jason Shufflebotham (Prestatyn) who both finished on 281, 5 under par and each collect 50 Pinnacle points.

 

In 4th place came Ian Flower (Mountain Ash) who collects 30 Pinnacle points while the Aberconwy Trophy Champion, Nick James (Wenvoe Castle) adds 25 points to his total for 5th place.

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) retains his place at the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

                                                          FARR 5th at BRABAZON

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) finished in 5th place at the Brabazon Trophy at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club.  Farr scored rounds of 74, 68, 76, and 74 for a four round total of 4 over par to finish 7 strokes behind the winner, Darren Wright of the Rowlands Castle Golf Club.  Farr collects 135 Pinnacle points and now has a lead of over 400 points on the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

Four other Welsh players made the cut at Royal Liverpool; Chris Nugent (Fulford Heath) finished in a tie for 25th place after a final round of 73, Alastair Jones (Radyr) tied for 28th and collects 54.25 Pinnacle points, Matthew Moseley (Carmarthen) tied for 43rd while Jamie Howie (Royal St David’s) tied for 58th, both Moseley and Howie collect their first Pinnacle points of the season.

    

ENOCH REACHES QUARTERS AT AMATEUR

 

On his return from college in the USA, Rhys Enoch (Truro) reached the quarter finals of the Amateur Championship at Muirfield.  Enoch breezed through the qualifying stages with rounds of 67 and 71 and then battled his way to the last eight of the Championship before losing out to England’s Matthew Nixon.  Enoch collects his first Pinnacle Order of Merit points of the year; 50 for qualifying and 120 for reaching the quarter finals to move into 4th place on the current Pinnacle list.

 

The Pinnacle Order of Merit leader, Oliver Farr (Ludlow) also qualified at Muirfield with rounds of 74 and 68 but then lost to Stephan Jaeger of Germany by 5 & 4 in the last 64. Farr collects 50 Pinnacle points and retains his position at the top of the Order of Merit.

 

Ben Westgate was the only Welshman to complete all four rounds at the Berkshire Trophy with rounds of 70, 72, 73 and 72 to finish in tie for 16th place and collects 14.5 Pinnacle points.

 

                                                      JAMES WINS ABERCONWY

 

 

Nick James (Wenvoe Castle) won his first Pinnacle Order of Merit event at the Aberconwy Trophy.  James scored rounds of 70, 71, 79 and 71 to take the title by 2 strokes from Prestatyn’s Jason Shufflebotham and Tom Rees (Creigiau).

 

James collects 100 Pinnacle points to move in to 5th place on the Pinnacle Order of Merit while Shufflebotham and Rees each collect 50 Pinnacle points.

 

At the St Andrews Links Trophy Ben Westgate led the Welsh challenge for honours and finished in a tie for 7th collecting 100 Pinnacle points scoring rounds of 67, 71, 70 and 74.  Alastair Jones fresh off his victory in the Welsh Youths tied for 15th while James Frazer (Pennard) closed off his tournament with a two under par 70 at Old Course to tie for 19th and collects 61.4 Pinnacle points.

 

NO CHANGE AFTER SCOTTISH STROKE PLAY

 

The Pinnacle Order of Merit remains unchanged following the Scottish Open Stroke Play.  Oliver Farr was the only player from Wales to compete but missed the cut.

 

FARR INCREASES LEAD

 

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) was the only Welsh player to score Pinnacle points at the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship at Royal St David’s.  Farr scored rounds of 68, 70, 71 and 69 to finish in a tie for 10th place on 2 over par some 11 shots behind the winner Eddie Pepperell of Drayton Park.

 

Farr collects 26 Pinnacle points to increase his lead at the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit to over 250 points.

 

Three other Welshmen made the cut at Royal St David’s; Luke Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan) T24, Alastair Jones (Radyr) T30 and Rhodri Fieldhouse (Wrexham) T33.

 

 

PUGH WINS AGAIN

 

Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) continued his fantastic play by winning the Clwyd Open by a staggering 16 strokes.  Pugh was trailing Geraint Jones (Royal St David’s) by two strokes after the 1st two rounds at Prestatyn having scored 72 and 71 and then accelerated away from the field with rounds of 67 and 65 at Wrexham.  Pugh’s victory at the Clwyd is his 3rd win of the year following the Peter McEvoy at Copt Heath and the Fairhaven Trophy.

 

Pugh collects 100 Pinnacle points for his efforts at Prestatyn and Wrexham. In a tie for 2nd place came Luke Jackson (Worksop), Richard Bentham (St Pierre), Gareth Evans (Vale of Llangollen) and Chris Nugent (Fulford Heath) who all collect 38.75 Pinnacle points apiece.

 

Oliver Farr was the only Welshman to make the journey to the Irish Open Stroke Play at Royal Dublin and finished in 11th place after rounds of 81, 74, 73 and 72 to collect 56 Pinnacle points and stay on top at the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

 

FARR & WESTGATE MAKE CUT AT LYTHAM       

 

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) emerged as the top Welshman at the Lytham Trophy at the weekend. Farr scored rounds of 73, 71, 81 and 77 for a tie for 31st place and collects 51.6 Pinnacle points to extend his lead at the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

Ben Westgate (Truro) was the other Welshman to make the cut and scored 71, 76, 78 and 78 to finish the week tied for 36th and collects 50 Pinnacle points.

 

 

FARR WINS AT TRUBSHAW

    

Oliver Farr (Ludlow) added the Trubshaw Cup to the Duncan Putter that he won two weeks ago.  Farr scored rounds of 70 and 68 at Tenby to win the Tenby Golden Eagle and then added scores of 72 and 76 to claim the Trubshaw Cup by two strokes from Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) and James Frazer (Pennard). Farr collects 150 Pinnacle points and surges ahead at the top of the Pinnacle Order of Merit.

 

Rhys Pugh, fresh from his victory at the Peter McEvoy Trophy shot rounds of 72, 74, 71 and 71 to claim 2nd place alongside James Frazer (71, 70, 71, 76).  Each player collects 75 Pinnacle points.  Rhys Pugh with his rounds of 71 and 71 at Ashburnham wins the Carmarthenshire Open.

 

Other promising performances came from the Welsh Amateur Champion, Luke Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan) who finished in a tie for 4th place with Richard James (Aberystwyth) and Ireland’s Michael Durcan.

 

FIRST PUTTER FOR FARR

 

 

Ludlow’s Oliver Farr won the Duncan Putter for the first time with a six stroke victory over 4 time Champion Nigel Edwards (Whitchurch). Farr scored rounds of 66, 67, 71 and 73 to close out the weekend on 277, 3 under par for a convincing victory.

 

Farr collects 150 Pinnacle Order of Merit points for the win.

 

Edwards finished in 2nd place after rounds of 74, 65, 69 and 75 to collect 90 Pinnacle Order of Merit points with Tom Boys (Royal Liverpool) in third place on 284 strokes.  Chris Nugent (Fulford Heath) was Wales’ next best finisher on 291 strokes in 13th place and collects 16 Pinnacle points while Southerndown’s Michael Hearne finished in 16th place and collects 14 points.

 

Other promising performances came from Juniors; Rhys Pugh (Vale of Glamorgan) tied 17th and Oliver Baker (Cardiff) tied 36th.
