WELSH WIN WELL TIMED FOR JACK

August 8, 2017.

Llanwern golfer Jack Davidson hopes his Welsh Amateur Championship win is perfectly timed just before the Home Internationals and Walker Cup team selection.

Next up for the new Welsh champion is the Home Internationals, with the team hoping to build on their European Nations success this season to bring the title back to Wales after some near misses in recent years.

Then comes the Walker Cup team announcement, with Davidson joined by fellow Wales internationals David Boote and Owen Edwards in the wider squad which will be whittled down to the group of 10 to face the Americans at the Los Angeles Country Club.

“Obviously your home event is always a nice one to win, plus at the start of the year I would never have imagined winning three titles,” said Davidson, who also claimed the Spanish Amateur and European Nations Cup individual honours.

“With the Walker Cup announcement coming up, it seems this came at a good time for me – especially after having had a couple of missed cuts.

“I feel I am in the position I wanted to be in, having two match play wins might help me, but there are 15 to 20 guys who have all won or had good seasons. Whoever gets selected, it will be a very strong team.”

Davidson went into the Welsh Amateur as one of the favourites after hitting top form for much of this season.

“I would not say I changed much in my game,” he said. “I had a better short game plan over the winter with my coach Neil Matthews, it has all clicked a bit better and I feel I have matured so I can move on quickly from bad shots.

“I am looking forward to the Home Internationals next week. I am excited because it may be my last time playing for Wales, I will go to the qualifying school in October and try to earn my European Tour card there.

“As a team we were obviously pleased to win the European Nations Cup, but disappointed with the way we played at the European Team Championships.

“However we will go in with confidence, standing on the first tee knowing we can do well. I feel I have got a monkey off my back with the wins this year and that has helped my confidence.”
