Jane Wins in Spain
Wales Senior International Jane Rees has won the Spanish Seniors International Championship in Cadiz. The great Welsh showing at the event was capped with fellow international Vicky Thomas winning the doubles.
Rees won by eight shots, with a first round of 73 proving to be the round of the tournament and setting the platform for a fine victory in one of the top senior amateur events in Europe with 90 competitors taking part in the event's 20th year.
The Hendon golf club member had a six shot lead after the opening round which was played in tough weather conditions, with Ireland's Sheena McElroy in second and most of the field struggling to break 80.
Rees extended that lead with a second day 78 at the Novo Sancti Petri course in South West Spain, with German Tessa Oldenbourg finishing second, eight shots back, and Spain's Catalina Castillejo third, a further two shots back.
Carmarthen's Thomas partnered McElroy in the international doubles events and the pair lived up to their status as favourites by clinching the title, but only after coming back at the end to beat Spanish pair Cristina Marsans and Catalina Castillejo by a single shot.
